Holiday Activities
Experience Oz - Australia's ultimate "what to do" guide. The best tours and attractions one low price.
Cairns heritage of art began tens of thousands of years ago when Aborigines began painting their Dreamtime beliefs and legends on natural rock walls. Today works by local artists of many nationalities are on show in small galleries here, around Australia and overseas.
Cairns Regional Gallery housed in one of the city's classic old buildings, allows the first permanent exhibition of historical and contemporary works by local, national and overseas artists.
Art in all stages of creation can be seen at The Tanks Centre near the Botanic Gardens. World War II oil storage tanks have undergone an innovative redevelopment to become a lively, multi-purpose centre with facilities for art in all its forms including dance, theatre and film.
Cairns holiday travel
Travelling
the north is easy. Day and extended tours, safaris, cruises, flights
and charters with experienced, well-informed guides leave from
Cairns
and other towns. Some tours continue to the Northern Territory
and to the south.
For independent sightseeing cars, 4WDs, motorcycles, bicycles and small boats can be hired in bigger centres. Before driving too far from civilization it's wise to check on road, weather conditions and availability of food, fuel and places to stay. Buy a well-detailed map and, if you come from overseas, please ask about the road rules.
Cairns adventure and sport
Ranging from the thrills of white water rafting, bungy jumping and scuba diving to bush walking, trail riding and golf.
Go sightseeing in a helicopter, seaplane or the gondola of a rainforest cableway. Let experts help you land a game fish, barramundi or a mud crab.
Take to the water on a windsurfer, boom net, kayak, paddle steamer, or sailing boat. Climb a mountain, cool off under a waterfall, try aerobatics in an open cockpit biplane, drive a go kart.
Cairns wining and dining
Always an adventure. Try genuine Aussie bush tucker; local seafood, crocodile and venison; our huge variety of tropical fruits and vegetables; award-winning Australian wines; the local tea and coffee.
Eating
out is cheap by international standards and specialty restaurants
offer the world's cuisine.
You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner at a sidewalk cafe, a bistro or food
hall or dine in style at a silver service restaurant.
If you have cooking facilities it's easy to buy all you need for simple meals
with the flavours of the tropics.
